Wednesday, 23 January 2008
Sustrans 2 have published an overview of the voting for the recent lottery bid that will fund a walkway to connect the paths along the River Itchen over St Denys Beach, which shows the strength of local voting.  previously The voting figures for the different projects bidding for the money are given by Sustrans as follows

Project Name Total Votes  Online Votes  Telephone Votes
Sustrans' Connect2  119,348  59,390  59,958
The Black Country  83,556  26,785  56,771
Sherwood  48,822  18,438  30,384
Eden Project - The Edge  34,559  15,758  18,801

Each project was promoted on ITV, and the $50 million pot eventually went to the project with the most public votes.

Sustrans Boardwalk plans For St Denys Beach or Chalkies
written by Ann MacGillivray, February 16, 2008
I hope that if this project goes ahead the natural environment is taken into consideration.

Chessel Bay is just a little further downriver and is home to many waterfowl and other wildlife.

St Denys beach is a natural stop over for much of this wildlife when heading up or down river with the tides.

Increased traffic along this stretch may produce a decline in the rarer birds.

If the boardwalk is to be constructed then I hope some environmental landscaping is also to be considered!
